Gian Carlo Menotti (born July 7, 1911 Cadegliano, Lake Lugano, Italy - died February 1, 2007, Monte Carlo, Monaco) was an Italian composer and librettist. Menotti was enrolled at the Curtis Institute in Philadelphia in 1928 at the age of 16, where he befriended Samuel Barber .
While Barber was still a teenager at the Curtis Institute, he met fellow student Gian Carlo Menotti and began what would become six decades of friendship and mutual attraction. In 1943, they purchased a large house (nicknamed “Capricorn”) together in New York’s He also was half of classical music’s greatest gay power couple.
